Lois Achieves PAGB Distinction Award

Congratulations go to Lois Webb from all of the members of Nottingham Outlaws for recently attaining a Distinction award from the PAGB. This is a significant challenge and one that Lois addressed head on, below are her words & thoughts on how she actually approached the sittuation.

“The APM (Awards for Photographic Merit) are available to members of Clubs affiliated to the PAGB (Photographic Alliance of Great Britain) through their Federations. There are five levels of awards. Having been awarded my CPAGB (Credit) in 2015, I am delighted to have achieved success this April and have gained the next level of DPAGB (Distinction).

Adjudications are carried out by a panel of six adjudicators. Photography is more art than science and judges will always be influenced by their emotional response to an image. Each of the adjudicators vote on each photograph. A yes vote is recorded as a 4 and a no vote as a 2. Since a score of 300 is required to secure DPAGB, there is an assumption that 20 is the score to look for, though, in fact, you should aim for 6 adjudicators to vote yes, giving a score of 24 per photograph (I managed only 2 on or over 24).

This information is relevant as this was my second attempt. This time round I sought opinions and advice from a wider circle of photographers which helped me focus on the stronger images, rather than ones that had personal importance.

I was unable to attend the judging so I was on tenterhooks until the notification came through, which it did whilst I was in transit at Singapore airport, within a day of the event. Here are my photos and the scores they achieved”.

Below are Lois’s image submissions to achieve her “Distinction Award“.

The panel image below shows the individual scoring awarded to each image.

The Outlaws encourage its members to apply for accreditations and they offer a full support and mentoring package to enable them to do this, hopefully Lois’s success will be repeated by other members.
