May 2026 2nd Print Competition
The 1st print competition of 2026 was held on Thursday 26th March at St James church Hall the home of the Nottingham Outlaws. The print competition is run on a bi-monthly basis, through to the final round which is in November of the same year and all points scored in the rounds contribute towards the Outlaw of the year print league table.
The judge for this round of the competition was Bob Galley who is a member of Newark & District Photographic Society. There were two categories for Bob to judge, the Open category and the Themed category which was “Portraiture”. In total there were 29 entries in the open and 27 in the themed.
The Open competition again attracted a wide variety of genres of photography including sport, nature, landscape, artistic nude & architecture. The themed competition had many stunning portrait images and Bob said that this was going to be a very difficult competition for him to judge because of the quality of the work.
Theme Portraiture
The theme competition had many stunning portrait images and very high-quality prints, with a selection of them being printed at home. Please take time to look at the selection below, I am sure that you will agree with both Bob and myself that they are to a very high standard.
Bob held Nine images for a second viewing and final scoring and he awarded the win to Malcolm Nabarro for his image titled “The Norwegian”.

Malcolm had the following comments to say about his winning image.
“My image ‘The Norwegian’ was shot at a portrait session held by the club earlier in the year. Three models had been engaged for the shoot which gave members a really good opportunity to learn and hone their skills in portraiture. I enjoyed taking images of Frodo Rage Olson, my Norwegian, and despite the rather serious and threatening capture, Rage was a very gentle friendly subject. Sometimes the camera does lie!”

Open category
The open category always draws a wide selection of genres from the membership and this month was no exception and when you check out the selection below you will see what I mean. Of the twenty-nine images submitted for judging nine Images were held back for Bob to take a second look and further critique. Eventually after much thought and self-debate the winner was Patrick Wallis with his image titled “Greenfinch Battle”

Talking with Patrick after the competition I asked about the shot and where it was taken, these are his comments.
“This shot was taken on my first visit to Leeds Wildlife Photography Hide last year. I had gone hoping to get a photo of the Sparrowhawk but unfortunately it was not visiting. I did, however, get pictures of a Cuckoo and the Greenfinches and many other small birds were busy feeding. I noticed the Greenfinches squabbing and took a few frames and was surprised when I got home how clear the picture was.
A well deserved victory Patrick.
