May 2025 second Print Competition

The first print competition of Twenty twenty-five was held back in March at St James church Hall Mapperley the home of the Nottingham Outlaws.

Print competitions are run on a bi-monthly basis, through to the final round which is held in November and members scores are aggregated as the competition proceeds. The leader board following that first competition stood with Malcolm Nabarro in the lead, followed closely by Lester Woodward & in third place, Lois Webb.

The judge for this second-round print competition was Louise Langley who is a member of Long Eaton Photographic Society. There were two categories for Louise to judge, the Open category and the Themed category which in this instance was “Framing”. In total there were twenty-two entries in the Open category and twenty-nine in the themed.

The Open competition again attracted a wide variety of genres of photographic prints including sport, nature, artistic portrait, landscape (including images taken on the twenty twenty-four KitKat outing), architecture and several of the images were presented in black & white. The themed competition “Framing” equally had an interesting array of subjects that were framed in their settings, a viewing of the category images in this article will explain the theme visually.

Louise did comment that the quality of the work presented to her made the job of judging very difficult indeed.

Theme “Framing”

The themed images were varied and there were many interpretations of the theme. All of the prints were of a high standard, ten images were held back for a second judgement before final scoring and Louise awarded the win to Lester Woodward for his image titled “CARIAD PICTURED”.

I asked Lois to give us some detail & her thoughts about THREE GENERATIONS, this is what she said;

This image was from a trip I made with friends to Kashgar in 2010. We were all keen photographers and had split into pairs to explore the old city. Whilst my friend was busy with a group of children, I sought out a patch of light amongst the narrow streets. The collection of doors and the way the light bathed parts of the alley in light felt really charming. It wasn’t long before some residents walked through the space. I took several groups of people and a number of solitary travellers but it was this family group that I really like. The way the daughter is striding in such a purposeful and commanding way is delightful. With the flood of light I was able to use a small aperture and get all the group and their surroundings in focus. I sometimes wonder whether that little girl kept hold of her confidence. I hope so.

Following this competition, the NOPS Outlaw Print leader board has changed and Lois Webb leads (211pts), in second place is Malcolm Nabarro (210pts) & closely followed by Lester Woodward (209pts), things are heating up!

The Outlaws would like to thank Louise Langley for providing everyone who entered with beneficial comments and positive critique and being so appreciative of the images she was judging.
