August 2024 Fourth PDI Competition

August 2023 PDI Competition

August sees the Outlaws completing their fourth Projected Digital Image (PDI) competition of the year and things have started to warm up. Following this month’s competition, the DPI leader board is now as follows, Malcolm Nabarro leads the way with 285 points, followed by Chris Holdsworth on 276 and Nigel Stewart also on 276 points. Lester Woodward and Ray Andrews both have 274 points, let battle commence. The evenings judge was Gary Langley, a NEMPF competition judge who some of the Outlaws had met on previous occasions. Gary offered constructive comments and liked to “tell it as it is” and score images in his own unique manner.

There were two categories for Gary to judge on the evening, the Open category and the Themed, which this month was “High Key/Low Key”. There were approximately thirty entries in the Open category and twenty-eight in the themed.

The Open competition attracted many genres of photography from the recent Lincoln Steam Punk (Asylum) Festival, portraiture (Nottingham Pride Festival), wildlife, sport, and landscape images to name but a few.

The themed competition equally had a wide variety of images with many different visual interpretations of the theme and Gary again offered his opinion, critique & some suggestions of editing that would (in his opinion) benefit the image.

Theme – Hi Key/Low Key

The Themed PDI had images ranging from abstract, nature, landscape, pets, still life, shape & form through to architecture. A selection of images is incorporated in this article so please take a look and you will clearly see how our photographers’ imaginations really got to work with their own individual interpretations of that theme.

Gary commented that the images on display this evening were of a very high standard and made his job of judging very difficult. He managed to whittle them down to a final few and announced that the winner was Andy Gibbons with his image entitled “Between The Trees”

“Between The Trees” themed winning image by Andy Gibbons.

When asked about his winning image Andy told me that this was taken whilst he was out on a bike ride in the Keyworth area, he stopped, took one shot and then continued on his journey. That one shot was obviously sufficient as Andy had nailed it first time, although he added that the recent club night featuring image processing helped him to get the most out of his original file.

Themed Held Images

Malcolm Nabarro, Following Like, Lester Woodward, Forearm Bridge Split & Steve Roper, Pavement Café all scored 17 points. Chris Houldsworth, Kurfurstendam, John Young, Mist On The Rhine, Ray Andrews, Seapool Lido, Sue Jackson, Floral Display, Tabby, Mario, Lois Webb, Uyghur Mother & Son, all scored 18 points. Chris Houldsworth, London Louvres, Malcolm Nabarro, Lone Walker, Nigel Stewart, White Hall NYC & Smoke & Signals, Lester Woodward, Legs & Pearls, all scored 19 points. Lois Webb, Arkwright Building Window Winch scored 20 points but the winner was Andy Gibbons with his image titled Between The Trees also scoring 20 points.

Open category

In the open category seven images were held back for final judging but six other images were awarded scores of 17 points or higher.

Open category winning image “Dunstanburgh” by Ray Andrews.

Ray told me that this was a revisit to the location as when he arrived the first time, he realised he had all of his kit except a camera, doh! This visit was of four hours duration, tide times taken into account so that he could access the large boulders without fear of getting his feet wet. Long exposures (10 stop filter) & bracketed shots were all part of his strategy, it obviously paid off when Gary announced him as the winner.

Open Held Images

Sally Herbert, Alice, Malcolm Nabarro, Swimmer, Reg Patterson, Faces, Patrick Wallis, Felley Priory Tree, Lois Webb, Monstrosity, all scoring 17 points. Chris Houldsworth, The Chosen One and V&A Reflections, Nigel Stewart, Beach Racer, Lester Woodward, Gothic Pride, all scored 18 points. Ray Andrews, Rounding The Buoy, Sally Herbert 617 Airborne, Malcolm Nabarro, River Meuse At Dawn, all scored 19 points. The winner was Ray Andrews with his image Dunstanburgh Castle.

The Outlaws would like to thank Gary for providing everyone with an entertaining evening, offering constructive comments, positive suggestions and having an appreciation of the Outlaws creative works.
