September 2026 – (late June 2026) 3rd PDI Competition
The month of June’s PDI competition was cancelled due to one of this summer’s heatwaves, and it was rescheduled for September 10th.
This means that we have two competitions this month, a busy time for all concerned. On the competition front things are certainly warming up as we are now well into the digital competition year.
This month has two categories one being an “Open” where members can submit images of their choice across a whole gambit of photographic genres, the other being the “Theme”, which was “Panel”.
A panel is an image that is made up of several images it should have a common theme, provide continuity, work harmoniously together, ideally have a similar exposure as well as many other criteria. This was a new genre for the club and for many of its members. It provided technical challenges in respect to creating a single jpeg file from several images, but we all managed it and we learnt something new.
It proved to be a very popular competition theme and one that we have decided to repeat in the future.
The judge for the evening was Malcolm Sales who has visited the Outlaws on several occasions both as a judge and guest speaker. He would have his work cut out tonight with the panel competition as the members were expecting feedback on their creativity.
As is usual the Open competition attracted many genres of photography from reportage, architectural, nature, sport, abstract, portrait, nature and landscape.
The themed panel competition equally had a wide variety of images and Malcolm frequently praised the quality of the images that were presented to him.
Theme “Panel”
The Themed Panel PDI had a wide variety of images and Malcolm said he would be holding many of them back for a second look, in all that amounted to sixteen images a sign of quality indeed.
Malcolm gave detailed critique and offered comments where he considered images could be improved, if the authors wished to do so, but he also helped many of us understand the connectivity that a panel image should have.
Finally, Malcolm picked a winner and that was awarded to Malcolm Nabarro for his image, “Calm Demonstration.”

In the open category fifteen images were held back for final judging.
Open category winning Image “Ancestral Disapproval” by Sue Hartley
Sue had the following comments to make about her image.
“I was asked to do some photography for a dress hire business, using the owners’ daughters and their friends as models. They had permission to use Norwood Park as a location, and they styled the girls in the dresses they wanted to showcase. I then had full control of lighting, and where and how to pose the models, who really threw themselves into working with me. We had great time and got some fun shots that we were all happy with”.
