Outlaws Go Roller Derby

NOPS members were fortunate to be invited to a training session with Nottingham Roller Derby at Southglade Leisure Centre in Bestwood. Four members attended, and what began as a simple visit quickly turned into a thoroughly enjoyable and eye‑opening afternoon. From the moment we arrived, the team made us feel completely at ease. They took the time to show us where it was safe to stand, how to move around the track without getting in the way, and when it was appropriate to step closer for photographs or shift position as the action unfolded.

Their patience and enthusiasm made a huge difference. Before the skating even began, they walked us through the key positions and rules of roller derby — the roles of Blockers, Jammers and Pivots, how each contributes to the strategy of a jam, and what to look out for when the pace suddenly changes. Having that context made it far easier to follow the flow of play, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for just how much skill and communication the sport demands.

Once the session got underway, the energy on track was infectious. The Blockers formed tight, shifting walls; the Jammers darted through gaps with impressive speed; and the Pivots directed the pack with sharp awareness. For photographers, it was a gift — constant movement, dramatic turns, and moments of pure athleticism that created brilliant opportunities for action shots throughout the afternoon.

It was also clear how supportive and close‑knit the Nottingham Roller Derby community is. Between drills, skaters chatted with us, answered questions, and shared insights into training, teamwork, and the wider derby scene in Nottingham. Their openness made the experience not just informative, but genuinely warm and memorable.

A big thank‑you to all the Nottingham Roller Derby members for having us — and best of luck in your game on 9 May……………………

We’ll be cheering you on.
